The Country Club Plaza
The Country Club Plaza is one of the first outdoor shopping areas developed in the country. The Plaza opened in 1923 to immediate success and has lasted with little interruption since that year. The Plaza offers shopping, dining, arts, and entertainment for people of all ages. It is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. The complexion of the shops has changed over the years, but it still offers local retailers and restaurateurs. Nationally well-known retailers are also part of the mix to include Apple, Coach, Eileen Fisher, Kate Spade, Pinstripes and soon will also be home to Nordstrom’s.
Many of the restaurants are concepts developed by local chefs, some of which are James A Beard winners. There is no shortage of selection of cuisine.
The Plaza is also host to the annual Plaza Art Fair, which will celebrate it’s87th year. The Plaza Art Fair encompasses nine city blocks and welcomes a crowd of over 250,000. Featuring 240 artists, the Plaza Art Fair is a top-ranked, national art event with three live music stages and over 20 featured restaurant booths. It continues to be a weekend of people simply celebrating art and each other, as well as Kansas City’s unofficial welcome to the fall season.
Nothing says Thanksgiving tradition better than the Plaza lighting ceremony. This is the official kickoff for the holiday season. Some 250,000 people descend on the plaza for the chance to see 15 blocks of holiday lights come on all at once with the flip of a switch. 2018 marked 89 years of this tradition, and gets better each and every year!
